A Continental Cycling Adventure

Bikepacking trip in the US

Exploraris: Paul, you've embarked on quite the adventure! Can you give us a brief introduction to who you are and what inspired you to set out on this journey?

Paul Lefort: My name is Paul Lefort, a 28-year-old from France. For the past five years, I have been living in North America, residing in both the United States and Canada. Throughout my life, I've met inspiring individuals who've taught me that life is fleeting, and we should chase our dreams instead of finding excuses.

Exploraris: What was your initial plan for this cycling journey?

Paul Lefort: Initially, my plan was to cycle across Canada, from Quebec to Vancouver. However, upon reaching Vancouver, I chose to extend my journey down the Pacific coast of the US, through Mexico, and into Guatemala, finally stopping when I felt ready to do so.

Exploraris: During your travels, you've shown a strong interest in raising awareness for a rare disease. What led you to choose this particular cause?

Paul Lefort: I felt it was important to choose a disease that nobody ever talks about. I wanted to discuss a disease that truly puts into perspective the judgments people have about those with rare diseases. I have been impressed by the positive spirit, courage, and resilience of the patients affected, many of whom have had to face misguided judgments and potentially mistreatment from their loved ones.

Exploraris: How have the families of those affected by this rare disease responded to your efforts?

Paul Lefort: When parents of children with this disease contacted me to express their gratitude and share their personal stories, they were often in tears. It seemed like a great relief for them to be able to discuss their experiences and to know that someone was taking action related to their situation.

Exploraris On your cycling journey, you've had some unique encounters. Can you share one memorable experience with us?

Paul Lefort: During my ride through South America, I happened upon a group of cyclists dressed in an unusual manner. As I got to know them, I discovered they were on a 500-kilometer journey to attend a wedding. They invited me to join them for the celebration, and I spent three days there, warmly welcomed by delightful people as we celebrated the union of two individuals I had never met before.

Exploraris: What have been some of your favorite moments throughout your journey?

Paul Lefort: The best moments vary from day to day; it could be when I start cycling in the morning, when I stop to get water or food, when I interact with people on the road who wave at me, when I arrive at my destination, when I find a great camping spot, or when I cook my meal.
