Broken from the inside
After a few days, the mechanic started feeling weird. I stopped several times to figure out where it could come from. I cleaned my bike from the dirt and oiled my parts. After that things sounded better, for a time.
One day, as I was approaching the central part of Vietnam, it started raining very heavily. As I was the only one left on the road I decided to take cover as fast as possible. Suddenly, I heard a loud metal noise and I barely manage to keep control of my bike. I stepped down to witness with anxiety that my rear wheel detached from frame… even worse! When I tried to spin it, it barely would. Something was broken on the inside.
That was unfixable, especially being halfway in the jungle under a pouring rain…
That’s the only moment when I deeply felt I wanted to be anywhere but where I was.
I did the only thing I could: I pushed my 30 kilos loaded bike with a broken wheel for 27 kilometers to find a bus station.
