Fingers crossed
Vietnam was my first choice. The beautiful landscapes and the history definitely got my attention. I was pretty interested in Hanoi and indeed this place surprised me several times. I spent two weeks there to prepare for the rest of my journey. In eager to discover the heart of this country I decided to keep off the coast. I started exploring Sapa and the surrounding mountains: painful but beautiful. Then I headed toward the Ho Chi Minh trail where I knew I would be more away from the main touristy places. But I also kept in mind that I would also be more away from any place where I could repair my bike if needed.
So I made a list of what could go wrong: flat tire, broken spoke, broken chain, broken wheel… I could handle most of them, and fortunately, the worst one's scenarios are rare.
Crossing fingers, it should be fine.
Here we go! Leaving the northern mountains, I am now riding south to meet the Ho Chi Minh trail. I remember a hilly ride until I could finally reach some flat roads. And I enjoyed them! But nothing can last forever. Riding the backcountries also meant a bit more of a rough ride as roads could sometimes turn into trails. In my case they turned into muddy trails, forcing me to push my loaded bike for several kilometers sometimes.
But this is not where the real problem started.
