‘¿Estaré cruzando la línea roja?’
Dejo atrás el Balcón y acometo el segundo sector de esta “etapa reina”, la Arista Sureste, que nos depositará en la Cima Sur. Me estoy retrasando del grupo. Voy muy, muy cansado. Cada cinco pasos, del uno al cinco (pues la cabeza no da para más números), tengo que parar cinco minutos; y así, con monotonía, una y otra vez. ¡Madre mía, a este ritmo no voy a llegar nunca! No noto los dedos de los pies. ¿Estaré cruzando la línea roja? Empiezo a considerar la idea del abandono y... me echo a llorar, sí, con mocos. ¡Su puta madre! ¿Será posible? La montaña me deja subir, pero el cuerpo me está fallando. Esto no estaba en el guión. Nuevamente, mi ángel de la guarda: “A ver, tranquilo, tira de cabeza, como cuando te sacan de punto en la bici, que sí se puede; cuenta seis pasos, no cinco; descansa cuatro minutos, no cinco; y mueve frenéticamente los dedos de los pies... ¿Ves? Se puede.” Poco a poco, voy alcanzando al resto de escaladores de mi equipo. Amanece rojo a mi derecha y, a mi izquierda, la negra sombra piramidal del Everest se proyecta en la lejanía. Pura magia. Me encuentro mejor y hasta tengo el ánimo de hacer fotos. En tres horas (desde el Balcón) alcanzamos la Cima Sur, a 8750 metros. Aquí, mi sherpa dice de descansar, vale, pero pretende hacerlo junto a la cueva en la que está el cuerpo de Rob Hall (el de la película “Everest”), y eso no vale. ¡Ya me vale con un muerto en esta jornada! Mientras mi guía descansa, yo abrevio la parada y me pongo en marcha, alcanzando nuevamente al grupo.
