I was very wrong about that…
First of all, a flat land only means that you have absolutely no shelter. The sun is crushing, a billion starving swamp mosquitoes are waiting for you to take a few seconds to break, the wind makes you feel like you are dragging a barbell at the back of your bicycle and you have nowhere to camp.
But despite all that I was still grateful not to fear being eaten alive by night time (I think it was actually my greatest fear at that time).
But once again I underestimated things.
After one of the quietest evenings I had, I went into my tent in a blissful silence. Not a single noise, it almost felt like the world stopped for a moment. As I was slowly closing my eyes this is when I heard it: A deep and distant roar. Then the wind came to shake me out of my sleepiness. I rushed out of my tent and this is when I saw it: An angry sky pouring rain of lightning walking toward my lonely tent sitting in the middle of a wet open field. I could hear my heart pounding in my ears as I realized how helpless I was. Standing and watching every step of that flying giant I was getting ready to be swallowed…
The storm passed just a few hundred meters from me.
